OKLAHOMA CITY — The Home Depot Foundation and Rebuilding Together OKC are transforming the home of a 93-year-old U.S. Army veteran.

Joseph Moore served as an ambulance driver while deployed in Japan and Korea.

After his service, Moore returned to Oklahoma to pursue a career as a tailor and opened a shop out of his home, which is now in need of some serious repairs.

“We’ve got a grant with Rebuilding Together to help renovate Mr. Moore’s home,” said Mitch Rusk, a local Home Depot store manager. “He hasn’t been able to hang his clothes up for a while. So, we’re going to put in some new curtain rods, or clothes rods, things like that.

They’re also installing new doors, cabinets, a new refrigerator and fixing up his car port.

“I’ll have a new house when they’re through with it,” Moore told News 4.

Moore said he never expected such a great turnout. Over 30 volunteers from all over Oklahoma and Texas showed up on Tuesday to help renovate his home.

“I feel awfully good, because I thought I’d been neglected. I had been injured and then I didn’t, you know, get credit for it,” Moore said.

Fixing up his house seemed like an impossible task both physically and financially, which is why The Home Depot Foundation and Rebuilding Together OKC do what they do.

“We love helping veterans. That’s part our mission, to make sure every veteran has a safe place to call home,” Rusk said.

“It’s been a good day. I never would have expected this,” Moore said.

As part of the campaign, The Home Depot is encouraging the nation to “Choose to Serve” those who served the country.
